Social media have changed the world in just over the last 15
plus years. In this week blog I will be comparing two companies that utilizes
two very famous social media tool, Twitter and Facebook.
First up on the line is the SportsCenter vs Walmart through
facebook. Starting with Sportscenter page, it has about 11.7 million like with
a release date in 1979. Walmart have about 3 times as many like, coming in at
about 32.7 million likes, with a release date in 1962. I think Facebook have
been a great tool for these two companies. They both are promoting great deals
and special events that will be coming up. Like, for instance Walmart is
advertising their great looks for the fall with the season changing. On top of
that, they are promoting some of their best merchandises that are ONLY available
at Walmart.com. I guess this is a way of interacting with their customers, by
getting them to shop more online and at the same time advertising their new
items.
SportsCenter, however have a different approach. Unlike
Walmart, I feel like their audience is determined by what sport that is going
on during that season. For example, it’s the NFL season and most of the headliner
will be about the NFL. But, the SportsCenter isn’t just about professional athletes,
there are also highlights from sports all over the world. Whether it’s how many
weeks Tony Romo will be out to a freshman running back in high school rushing for
over 300 yards and 6 touchdowns.
With over 11 million users, SportsCenter have found a way to
keep their audience and that is to post up any game highlights and breaking
news in sports.
Let’s move away from Facebook and move on to their Twitter
accounts. Walmart have about 700k followers and about 370k tweets. Whereas,
SportsCenter have about 21 million followers and 66.2k tweets. Walmart still
advertise and promotes their great shopping deals of the season however I think
their best audience comes from a partnership through Walmart, for instance a
band called TheVamps tweeted
There was several
tweets that TheVamps tweeted out about Walmart and it had been retweeted
several hundred times already.
SportsCenter seems to really interact with their audience.
The Seahawks just beat the Lions and theirs a controversy of the officials
calling a bad play. Within minutes after
the game ended, SportsCenter already updated their tweets 10 times about that
particular situation. SportsCenter even asked a question and over time it becomes
and discussion post for anyone.
Overall, both companies utilizes their social media tools really well. Engaging and keeping their audiences entertained and waiting for the next big news or event to be posted
